Bring Your Own Key
Connect your own Anthropic, OpenAI, or Gemini key on any plan and pause credit usage entirely.
Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) lets you run AI generation on your own provider key instead of sprintrr's credits.
Eligibility
BYOK is available on every plan, including the free trial — there's no upgrade required. When BYOK is on, generation runs on your own key and consumes no sprintrr credits; your balance is preserved.
Supported providers
| Provider | Where to get a key | Default model |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic (Claude) | console.anthropic.com/settings/keys | claude-sonnet-4-6 |
| OpenAI | platform.openai.com/api-keys | gpt-4o-mini |
| Google Gemini | aistudio.google.com/app/apikey | gemini-3.1-flash-lite |
You can optionally override the model per provider via the curated dropdown in Settings → API Keys — pick from the list of supported models for that provider rather than typing free-text.
You can also switch between sprintrr credits and your active BYOK provider on a per-generation basis from the generate modal (see AI Generation → Choose your AI source per generation).
The Quality / Speed toggle in the generate modal only applies to the sprintrr-credits path. While BYOK is active, the toggle stays visible but goes inert (both buttons dim and disabled) — your BYOK key is already the source, so the mode picker has nothing to choose between.
How credits interact
While BYOK is on, your monthly sprintrr credits are paused — your balance stays intact and is not consumed. You pay your AI provider directly for usage. Turn BYOK off to resume using sprintrr credits.
Pausing means preservation, not loss: your credit balance is untouched while BYOK is active and is available again the moment you disable BYOK.
Adding a key
In Settings → API Keys:
- Choose a provider and paste your API key (optionally set a custom model).
- The key is validated with a live test call before it is stored — an invalid key is rejected immediately.
- Save. When you have keys for multiple providers, pick the active provider.
- Toggle BYOK enabled on.
Security
- Keys are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM using a server-side encryption secret; the raw key is never exposed back to the browser.
- Only a short hint (first/last few characters) is stored for display so you can recognize which key is configured.
- You can replace or delete a provider key at any time; disabling BYOK stops it being used without deleting it.
